Posted by Steven Mueller at 23rd June, 2009

Americans and people around the world find a deep passion in watching their favorite movies. It is a past time that we seem to enjoy as we are entertained by our favorite movie genres.

Each year we spend over 100 million dollars renting and buying movies, DVD’s and films that match our particular taste in cinema enjoyment. One look at all the theaters and movies houses that grew in America over the past 20 years, one would be inclined to think that our obsession with movies is entirely new to this generation. It is not.

However, when you study history, you will see that movie watching was a favorite source of entertainment during some of the most turbulent times in America history. People flocked to theaters during the Great Depression and throughout both world wars.

Movies really became the most sought after form of entertainment when sound was first introduced. To hear the characters actually talking to the movie watching experience to a whole new level. It was then that they actually began to bond with their favorite actors such as Shirley Temple as they heard the sound of their favorite actors for the first time.

Other popular films that depicted the rise of the mob in the U.S. such as gangster movies seemed to gender great interest amongst the working class men and young teenage boys. A favorite amongst women seemed to be musicals and plays staring well known actors of that time.

However, during The Great Depression, many people did not have money for entertainment. A movie ticket was equivalent to a meal ticket. So people started turning to entertaining radio shows. Here they could listen to their favorite radio personalities as stories of adventures, mysteries and romance were play out in great detail.

Instead of watching a movie, people could listen to popular movie stars and invited guests as they told stories of romance, adventure and mystery. Entire families would huddle around one small radio and would listen with great intent to the popular movie stars of that era.

Another big hit during the 1920’s was swing music performances put on by Big Bands. Since most of these performances were aired over the radio, it became a popular source of entertainment during the long evening hours.

Even though the people during the Great Depression did not have money to spend for entertainment, they seemed to always find a way to have fun and be entertained. This is a great testament to the strength and will-power to carry on during tough times.

Today, we have access to millions of movie rentals and DVD’s at the click of a mouse. It is amazing how technology has changed the way we seek entertainment. With a little search online, you can find all types of downloadable movies to rent and buy such as horror, comedy, romance, Sci-Fi, and westerns. Just do a little research and find a safe reliable source to download from.

Fat Freddy’s Drop CD Dr. Boondigga & The Big BW

Posted by Patrick Daniels at 23rd June, 2009

The seven member band from New Zealand utilize a unique blend of Jazz, Reggae and Hi Tek Soul to create a sound all their own. Since their debut album in 2005, called Based on a True Story, this incredible group has soared to fame and stardom. Their deep soulful cuts have made them favourites all over Europe as well, allowing them to tour the globe three times.

With so many one hit wonders on the scene, fans and critics alike were awaiting this ever so anticipated new album with high hopes. The release of Dr. Boondigga & the Big BW really fit the bill, and eclectic collection of songs with a story, meditative pieces and pieces that are just all around fun, this album reaches a little further for the band, and I am sure the Fat Freddy’s Drop fans will hear the maturity of their life experiences in this new album. Their music is evolving and honestly it is all for the better.

“Pull and Catch” one of the album tracks, was written while they were out fishing with Dallas’ uncle. They left in the morning, came home singing the song and recorder the demo that same day. “The Nod” was inspired by a communal flat that some of the band members stayed at a few years ago, it has a New Orleans Flavour and a party vibe.

My favourite track, I must say from this CD is by far the Big BW probably the most tame and meditative piece in the collection, yet it seems to touch you in a way, that much of today’s music just doesn’t. Of course, this does not take away from the other title track Boon Digger with vocals from Dallas and deep lyrics makes the perfect compliment to the mellower Big BW track. And honestly, I can really understand why both are title tracks.

This second album shows more of the bands true self, then their first release, and is a more deeper, soulful collection; a must have for all Jazz fans. This is an album that you should definitely check out, even if you never heard of the band. Oh and the album cover have amazing detail, definitely worth the look!

Musical performances put on by Big Bands were another great hit during the Great Depression. People would listen to these musical shows and stage performances over the radio as an alternative to spending money for movie tickets. It was very popular.

Grizzly Bear Most Anticipated Album to Date - Veckatimest

Posted by Jennifer Thames at 8th June, 2009

Grizzly Bear, a group of four lads, is as humble as they get. Although their last album, Yellow House, was received with wide approval by critics and fans they still continued to tour small bars and help gain exposure for friends.

Things have changed since then, and the four lads have seen themselves open up for top-tier acts such as Feist and Radiohead. Regardless, Grizzly Bear have remained humble, and it’s not their fault that Veckatimest may in fact be the most hyped record of the year so far.

This album is better then anyone ever expected it to be. Veckatimest, takes the lush components we loved from Yellow House and brings them to new heights. Vocal harmonies from songs like “Two Weeks” and “While You Wait For The Others” are reminiscent of Yellow House favorites “Knife” and “Easier”. If you were a fan of the Yellow House orchestral sound then you will certainly enjoy Veckatimest.

The Grizzly Bear approach to music has undoubtedly changed on this album. The meandering qualities from Yellow House, were replaced with a pop sensibility. Almost every track, on Veckatimest, stands out, which means a lot in an industry where singles are the primary focus. Even though each song can surely prevail on its own, it is meant to be heard as a cohesive unit, listened from beginning to end.

The Grizzly Bears have maintained their position in the music industry as the most forward thinking modern rock acts. Although there is not much talk about their future plans, I am hoping it will not be another three year wait for their next album.
